The Ivar Theater was built in 1951 and was a serious venue thru the 70’s. It then alternated as a burlesque house and rock and roll hall. The Grateful Dead played there. By the 80’s it had become a full time strip club. As a promotion, they came up with Wednesday being Camera Night. While I’m sure most cameras had no film, some “serious” photographers shot there including Garry Winogrand. I went there to shoot for “Women on Display”, but came to realize the two rolls I shot that night should be seen alone. |
